Possible Complications After Gastric Surgery

The insertion of a gastric tube is one of the most commonly used procedures in obesity surgeries worlwide. Gastric sleeve surgery is becoming an increasingly popular method in obesity surgeries.

The gastric sleeve is a very safe procedure when performed by an experienced surgeon. Some complications can occur after a gastric sleeve.

These complications can be the following:

1. Suture Leakage: This is a serious complication where leakage of stomach contents into the abdominal cavity may occur. This complication occurs on average in 2% of all patients.
2. Bleeding: Bleeding usually occurs where the stomach has been cut and sewn. This complication occurs on average in 2% of all patients.
3. Pulmonary embolism: A blood clot can form in the lungs, which then blocks a pulmonary artery. This complication occurs on average in 1% of all patients.
4. Stenosis in the stomach of the sleeve: A stenosis is a narrowing of the blood vessels or other hollow organs. Stenosis is a rare complication, but it leads to serious nutritional problems. The appearance of these complications is almost non-existent, if the surgeon has long experience.
